Free tutoring for students — the Oakton Partners in Learning (OPIL) program
The Oakton Partners In Learning (OPIL) program offers academic, musical and extracurricular support to students outside of school hours.
Tutoring sessions are 1 hour long, and occur between 6-8 PM weekday evenings:
- For all grades and ages, elementary school through high school, and adult learners.
- Bring your homework and assignments, practice problem areas, or get help preparing for SOLs.
- Music & choir students can get support from our music teachers/musicians in classroom spaces.
- Tutoring usually takes place in our Fellowship Hall — a supervised, open space with access to laptops, wifi, a printer, and a variety of educational resources.
- A supervised reading and playroom is available for younger children while their older siblings participate in OPIL. There is a waiting room for parents.
- We provide healthy snacks to support learners who come to be tutored.

Our tutors are trained by professional educators and undergo background checks. They have the following backgrounds at the secondary level: mathematics, language arts, ESL, financial, computer/technology, photography, arts, music, science, computers, government, politics, economics, history, and spanish. If you have another need, please let us know and we will find a matching tutor. We also have high school students in our congregation available to tutor their peers or younger learners.

To volunteer
Be a part of the OPIL program and make a difference to local students and adult learners. We’d love to have you bring your energy and your professional expertise and educational assistance. We can use help with program planning, tudoring (elementary and secondary, and adult learners), food donation organization and prep, transportation, and prayer support…and more.
About the OPIL Program
While the plan for free tutoring is simple in its purpose, we understand that there are challenges that we must address to enable students to learn.
Oakton Partners In Learning (OPIL) uses our members educational and professional backgrounds to offer academic and extracurricular support to students who might not otherwise have access to extra help outside of school hours. We are eager to support both struggling learners and those who are pursuing advanced academic success — and everyone in between.
Several of our tutors have professional education backgrounds and have tutored for profit in the local community. Two of our organizers are current FCPS licensed educators. We hope to share our skills with students as a gift to foster educational equity and maximize the potential of our youth.
The OPIL mission program is supported by both funding from the congregation and a Faith in Action grant. We do not seek to proselytize or pressure participants to attend church services.
