On Sunday, September 14th, following the worship service, a special, brief Congregational Business Meeting will be held to vote on the licensing of Angela Finet to ministry, which is required by the District as the next step in the denomination’s licensing process.
Angela has been a member of Oakton since 2005, and is in her senior year of seminary. Angela has been a frequent guest speaker at Oakton. She has served an internship at Arlington Church of the Brethren, and has been a national voice for our church’s On Earth Peace witness.
Licensing provides an opportunity for pastoral candidates to explore their calling and ministry to others as they continue their study.
Please join us on September 14th for that important event in the life of our church.
I will be participating in the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Washington DC on October 18. This is my second year doing the challenge. The Best Buddies Challenge supports Best Buddies International (www.bestbuddies.org), a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The challenge offers the option of doing a 100, 62, or 20 mile bike ride, or a 5k run. I will be doing the 100 mile ride. Last year I rode 62 miles (the 100 mile was cancelled last year). I am raising money to meet my goal of $850. You can donate online at my donation webpage, or you can mail a check (instructions are on the webpage).
Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,500 middle school, high school, and college campuses across the country and internationally. Their programs engage participants in each of the 50 United States and on six continents, positively impacting 700,000 individuals each year.
This cause is near to my heart since my younger brother Todd has intellectual disabilities. Unfortunately he did not have the opportunity to participate in Best Buddies programs when he was in school.
This dish was served at Chris and Sherry Bowman’s celebration luncheon
Chicken Piquant
8 ounces canned mushrooms, sliced
4 chicken breast halves or 8 – 12 chicken tenders, skin removed
2 tablespoons cornstarch
¼ cup water
2 tablespoons oil (I use olive or canola)
¾ cup Rose’ wine
¼ cup soy sauce
1 clove garlic, pressed
2 tablespoons brown sugar
¼ teaspoon dried oregano
Place mushrooms over bottom of lightly greased 12- x 9-inch baking dish. Arrange chicken over mushrooms. Combine cornstarch and water in a small bowl, stirring until smooth. Stir in oil and next five ingredients. Pour over chicken. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until chicken is done. Serve with steamed rice.
