Thanks to all those who support our congregation in the above ways!
Worship Committee will be holding a series of training and support sessions during the month of August from 9:30 am – 10:30 am Sunday morning before church. We will meet in the Sojourners’ Sunday school class on the upper floor, far left. Light snacks.
The schedule is as follows: Children’s Storytellers this Sunday (Aug. 9), Sanctuary Partners on Aug. 16, Acolytes on Aug. 23, and Worship Leaders on Aug. 30.
Bring your questions and suggestions! Jan Burket for Worship Committee
Our congregation has again been asked to do the great job of scooping ice cream at Shepherd’s Spring on Saturday, August 15, at the Celebrate Summer Event. What can be more fun than serving free ice cream to smiling people? This event is for all of us and is also an outreach to the greater community. Come see what’s going on at Shepherd’s Spring and come scoop some ice cream, if you like. Please let Jerry Anne Kines know if you would like to help.
Are your August plans still up in the air?
Are you able to take a week off to help others?
There was a cancellation, so 12 people are needed in Spotswood, New Jersey August 23-29. Most would be helping with construction; you do not need to be skilled, just willing to work and learn. One or two people could be cooks/housekeepers. Volunteers need to be at least 15 years old (although possibly a younger sibling could help the cook/housekeeper at the church). Accommodation at a church, sleeping in beds (with memory foam mattresses). There is no fee to participate.
The group who volunteered in Spotswood in the spring had a great time. People there greatly appreciate the help rebuilding their homes after Hurricane Sandy!
If you might be able to help, please contact Jan Fischer Bachman ASAP at or 703-574-2544.
This is a quick and easy recipe that is well-loved in our family. My mother brought this recipe to our family reunions and church social events from the 1930s through the 1980s. The dish was always empty when she took it home.
Makes 24 squares
1 (8-ounce) package pitted dates, chopped
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 3/4 cups quick-cooking oats
* Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease 13 x 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter and set aside.
* Combine the dates, granulated sugar, and 1 cup water in saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook for about 5 minutes until it becomes a thick applesauce; set aside to cool.
* Thoroughly mix the brown sugar and butter together in a bowl. Set aside.
* Combine the flour, salt, baking soda, and oats in a large bowl and mix. Add the brown sugar mixture to the oat mixture and stir to make a crumble.
* Pat half of the crumbly oat mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spread the date mixture on top and then cover with the remaining oat mixture. Pat lightly into the filling.
* Bake for 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool slightly before cutting into squares.
